Kindergarten Curriculum at a Glance
Religion: God's love creates the universe, God’s love makes me who I am, God's love gives me Jesus, God's love teaches me to love, and God's love gives me people to love. We also learn about the saints, Jesus' miracles, holidays, Mary, and we use a Bible magazine.
Language Arts//Phonics/Zaner-Bloser Handwriting: Alphabet, sequence, comprehension, phonemic awareness, decoding, rhyming, cause and effect, high-frequency words, and story structure. Skills taught in themes from our language arts series and using the "Letter People", and Kid Writing.
Math: Shapes, sizes, sorting, classifying, measurement, time, money, counting, recognizing, and writing numbers 0 to 100 and beginning addition.
Social Studies: I Am Special, community, our country, seasons and holidays.
Science: Science Units. Each child is a “Kindergarten Scientist”. They are asked to do a simple science experiment.
First Grade Curriculum at a Glance
Religion: God's creation, Jesus is the Son of God, the Trinity, Bible/Scripture is God’s Word, Holy Mass (Liturgy of the Word), and sacraments (Baptism) are introduced. Prayers: Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Angel of God, and the Rosary. Community Service through Holy Childhood Association mission money and service projects.
Language Arts: Guided Reading (allows children to read at an independent level), Kid Writing, Making Words, Word Wall, Word Families, Phonics, Basic Grammar, Poetry, Fairy Tales.
Whole group reading instruction is taught using Houghton Mifflin series. The children continue Kid Writing from Kindergarten and become independent writers. The four square writing model is used to teach paragraph writing.
Phonics skills are taught using a textbook, the study of word families, making words, and word wall activities featuring high frequency words.
Basic grammar skills are taught using daily oral language drills featuring worksheets and overheads.
Math: Exploring numbers and patterns; Addition and Subtraction Facts to 18; Time; Money; Measurement; Fractions; Geometry.
Social Studies: Communities (our opening unit of study), Families, Native Americans and Pilgrims (November theme), Famous People and Symbols in American History (featured during January and February to incorporate Martin Luther King Day and Presidents’ Day); Our Nation and Holidays, Christmas Around the World (discusses traditions and customs – cross curricular with Religion).
Science: Science Kits focusing on matter, plants, and animals. Weather, seasons on a daily basis, dental hygiene in February, Human Body - Five senses and nutrition, and Scientist of the Week.
Second Grade Curriculum at a Glance
Religion: The Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist, parts of the Mass, saints, Advent, and Lent.
Language Arts: Sentence structure, types of sentences, parts of speech, process writing, vowels, consonant clusters, individualized spelling program, Zaner-Bloser cursive handwriting, poetry, skills found in six themes for reading.
Math: Addition and subtraction with regrouping and borrowing, up to three digits, money, time, measurement-standard and metric, and beginning multiplication
Social Studies: Community, directions, symbols, map skills, Native Americans, African Americans, using resources and needs vs. wants.
Science: Animal habitats, light, energy, butterflies, drug/alcohol prevention, space, the human body, motion and land features.
